Wellington, named after C.L. Wellington, a Colorado and Southern Railroad employee, is known as “Colorado’s Northern Gateway.” This slogan signifies that Wellington is the last major town headed north along I-25 towards Wyoming, and the first headed south towards Fort Collins. As an agriculturally rich community, Wellington’s early crops included sugar beets, alfalfa, corn, cherry orchards and was once known as the “lamb feeding capital of the world.” Wellington is still surrounded by productive farm land and grazing pastures and residents can enjoy four distinct seasons each year with a 145 day growing season.
The affordable housing prices and stunning views of the Colorado Rocky Mountains make Wellington worth considering, but its picture-perfect quaint main street, friendly folks and convenient access along I-25 to Fort Collins, Loveland, Denver and Cheyenne, Wyoming make it a wonderful choice for Colorado residents looking to live in a small community surrounded by a variety of attractions.
Population: 7,807 (2015 estimate)
Climate: Over 300 days of sunshine per year.
Geography: 12 miles north of Ft. Collins; 37 miles northwest of Greeley. 25 miles south of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Home to an expanding and growing park system, Wellington offers its residents a variety of playgrounds, sports fields, youth basketball and adult volleyball programs. The community even has a disc golf course. A nearby wildlife refuge and abundant fishing offer residents excellent outdoor activities. The foothills and mountains are only minutes away, including Horsetooth State Park which is a Northern Colorado hub for boaters and outdoor enthusiasts.
Miramont Family Medicine provides services within Wellington. University of Colorado Health’s Award-winning Valley Hospital, Harmony Campus and Medical Center are within a 20-minute drive. Quality specialists in virtually all areas are available in Fort Collins or within the University of Colorado Health network.
Agriculture remains the primary industry with vegetables, grain crops, sugar beets, alfalfa and cattle as major commodities. Wellington is also a bedroom community of Fort Collins and shares in its diverse economy on the strength of companies such as Anheuser-Busch, Woodward Governor, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, University of Colorado Health, New Belgium and O’Dell’s Brewing, along with Colorado State University and the Poudre School District.
Wellington is part of the Poudre School District which includes Eyestone and Rice elementary schools and Wellington Middle School within the Wellington city limits that allow younger students to study within their community. High school students attend one of three nearby Poudre School District high schools in Fort Collins, which are all very highly rated.
