Nestled at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Loveland is home to a thriving arts scene and numerous, nationally acclaimed sculptors. However, Loveland wasn’t always known for its vibrant arts scene, but rather as an agricultural center for growing sugar beets and sour cherries. Founded in 1877 along the newly constructed railroad line of the Colorado Central Railroad, Loveland gained its name in honor of William A.H. Loveland, the president of the Colorado Central Railroad. Loveland remained a $1 million per year cherry growing industry until the 1960’s when a series of droughts destroyed the industry and larger corporations such as Hewlett-Packard, Teledyne, and Hach moved to the area further diversifying Loveland’s economy.

Today, Loveland is an expanding town in Northern Colorado as a commercial hub with large shopping centers such as the Promenade Shops at Centerra and the Outlets at Loveland with the addition of Budweiser Events Center – a growing sports and entertainment arena attracting acts such as the Harlem Globetrotters, and being home to the Colorado Eagles Hockey Team. Despite its exponential growth, Loveland remains a town devoted to its artistic scene and charming small-town feel. The Benson Park Sculpture Garden contains an impressive collection of sculptures and the city is filled with interesting art galleries and artwork.  Each August, the city hosts Sculpture in the Park, a world renowned outdoor sculpture show attended by 150,000 art lovers. Loveland’s thriving downtown area, complete with examples of traditional Colorado architecture, is home to the almost 100-year-old Rialto Theatre. The theater has been lovingly restored and hosts performing arts groups & musicians and business meetings. In keeping with tradition, the Rialto periodically features silent films with live music accompaniment further supporting Loveland’s charm.

EDUCATION

The Thompson School District is one of the top school districts in Colorado with ACT scores well above the state average. Surrounded by higher education options, Loveland is in close proximity to Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, and University of Colorado in Boulder. It also hosts campuses of Aims Community College and Regis University.

RECREATION

Loveland’s extensive park system includes over 25 city parks, and two nearby mountain parks. The recently completed Loveland Sports Park boasts a synthetic turf Championship Field with terraced seating, field lighting, sand volleyball courts, basketball courts, inline hockey rinks and a skate park. If you like to hit the links, the Northern Colorado region has experienced a golf boom in recent years and there are literally dozens of courses within an hour’s drive, including three city-owned facilities.

Loveland gained its nickname "The Gateway to the Rockies" for many reasons. Aside from its location at the base of the Rocky Mountain foothills, Loveland offers skiers access to world-class slopes a few hours away; hikers and campers have hundreds of miles of trails to choose from in Rocky Mountain National Park – a 30 minute drive away; anglers can cast their flies in countless, mountain streams and nearby lakes. Boyd Lake State Park offers options for boaters, anglers, water skiers and beach goers.

Loveland’s major employers include Agilent Technologies, Thompson School District, McKee Medical Center and Wal-Mart Distribution Center.

HEALTH CARE

Loveland residents have full access to a variety of specialties at Banner Health’s McKee Medical Center and University of Colorado Health’s Medical Center of the Rockies, a Level II trauma center specializing in heart and trauma care.

SHOPPING

Loveland is home to a wide variety of shopping from antique shops in historic downtown to the outlet stores at The Promenade Shops at Centerra lifestyle center.

Loveland, as the “Sweetheart City,” is also known for hand-stamping Valentines from far and wide each year with a unique Valentine verse before mailing these letters of love across the globe.
